How It Works

Actually, the process is simple. BUT it may seem difficult if you are new to today's technology. We will provide specific information and guide you when you need help. So, welcome aboard perpetualSKYPE!

First, you will need a computer with webcam connected to the internet in your loved ones bedroom. We choose the bedroom because that is where a vulnerable person would most likely be abused or neglected. The webcam MUST be positioned so indecent exposure of the loved one is avoided. This is also a staff training situation.

Second, you will need a program called SKYPE video installed on that computer. SKYPE is free.  We will call this computer, computer #2.

Third, you will need a remote program on that computer to activate SKYPE. We used a free program called Teamviewer for our remote setup. We can only assist with these programs because these are the ones we are knowledgeable in.

There are others so if you are tech savvy go ahead and use whatever you are comfortable with.

Fourth, you will need the same type setup on a home computer. We will call this computer #1.

The home computer should be located in an area that can be randomly viewed throughout the day. You can also put SKYPE on a popup mode (a small thumbnail). By keeping the volume from computer #2 low, you can still use your computer. This can also be used in an office setting.

It is possible that in the near future we will be able to monitor SKYPE video on our Iphones or SmartPhones. So keep watching the future technology. It would be great to be able to  randomly communicate with, or monitor, our vulnerable loved ones throughout the day as we go about our daily business.

SUMMARY

In summary
, computer #2 is located in your loved ones' bedroom. The camera is set so as NOT to have indecent exposure. A low watt night light will more than likely be necessary for night-time monitoring. This is a dedicated computer and MUST be left on and unmoved at all times.

Computer #1 is located in the Home and is set up in a manner that random monitoring and communicating can be done throughout the day or night. Both computers must have the same identical compatible programs installed.

Computer #1 does not need to be a dedicated computer and can still be used while monitoring when SKYPE is in the popup mode. This computer can be used to randomly remotely activate SKYPE video on computer #2.

Please view the below videos. It will help clarify the setup and how to communicate and monitor at your convenience.

WHAT TO DO IF ABUSE OR NEGLECT IS SEEN

IF
SEXUAL or violent physical abuse is seen, immediately call 911 and report it to law enforcement authorities. Next contact the Caregiver Provider. Then you can head towards the residence. Unless you are next door or across the street, you can not help.

BUT you can help catch and convict the perpetrator. As you see the abuse, remain calm and make good notes of who, what, when, where, how. Was he/she tall, short, skinny, fat, bald, bearded, etc?  Type of clothing, hair style, exact time, etc. Exact time of day/night.  Make good accurate notes! Take snapshots!

Most likely any abuse or neglect you witness will not be life threatening. But anything not policy or proper, should be documented with notes and photos. This includes, but NOT limited to:

  • rough handling
  • not brushing teeth
  • not changing attends
  • indecent exposure
  • unsanitary or unclean conditions
  • not changing gloves after changing attends
  • improper transfer from chair to bed or bed to chair
  • not shifting their weight every 2 hours or so at night
  • unauthorized use by staff of television or other personal equipment

Any of the above could lead to more serious health problems. For instance, not changing attends could lead to rashes which could become infected. Not shifting weight every 2 hours could lead to serious bed sores or blood clots.

So even though something may at first seem trivial, report them to a supervisor immediately.
